| 1. Maritime Accident
Two police officers assisted in the rescue of crewmembers trapped in the hold of a ship which was filled with carbon monoxide. One of the police officers died while the other officer suffered serious injuries. After a trial in which the ship owners were held to be liable, we were able to obtain settlements on behalf of our clients in the millions of dollars.
2. Maritime Accidents - Crewmembers
Several crew members on a cruise ship suffered varying injuries during a lifeboat drill when the winch that was lowering the lifeboat failed, causing the lifeboat to drop more than 30 feet to the water below. After intensive investigation and filing of a lawsuit, the cruise line was caused to admit liability. Settlements and trial verdicts on behalf of the injured crew members, who came from various countries, were in excess of $2 million.
3. Maritime Accident – Crewmember
Our client, who was a crewmember aboard a ship, was violently assaulted with a knife by a deranged crewmember. After intense litigation, the vessel owner was forced to admit liability and a settlement in excess of $900,000 was obtained for the client.
4. Maritime Accident – Passengers
In this case, our firm represented two passengers who had suffered injuries in separate accidents, several weeks apart, when they were caused to fall over a stair railing on a vessel. After filing a suit on both claims and aggressively litigating against the vessel owners, we were able to obtain settlements on behalf of the clients that exceeded $2 million.
5. Maritime Accident – Passenger Claim
In this case, our client was a passenger aboard a cruise ship who signed up for a “quickie” scuba course. During the free swim part of the course, our client was kicked in the face and the breathing regulator was dislodged from her mouth. The instructor was not in the vicinity and the client suffered neurological injuries as a result of near drowning. We filed a claim on our client’s behalf against both the instructor and the cruise line. As a result of settlement negotiations and a trial, we were able to obtain compensation for the client in excess of $700,000.
